JATRA Bangladesh Retail Interior

Project Overview

“PATCHWORK – Cloth made by sewing together; a composition of smaller pieces of fabric with different patterns and colors, or the act of creating such a union.

Such a representation for the process of designing a space for JATRA BANGLADESH LTD- a renowned art & craft house of Bangladesh since 2000 by artist & musician Anusheh Anadil. A small lawn, open sky, memories and sustainable, up-cycled material comes together and create this architectural patchwork beyond a specific frame of space & time.

JATRA was planned to move in a new premise from their very old place in Banani to an individual House at Banani road 17/A due to reconstruct their old showroom building into a high-rise. So JATRA team had a strong urge to re-create their memory and introduce themselves in a new premise with blended uses which will owned by Nature & Creature.

Design started with tiny two storied brick structure building with very lower ceiling height, small rooms, peripheral plinth, green lawn along with some big trees. The very tight interior space converted to connected floor with interior and exterior aperture by perforating the structural brick walls in irregular interval and creates a maze-like space. A big multi-purpose hall (made of Aamkath structure) is leading all the spaces by inviting people from the road like a big tree shade and accommodate various kind of activities like music show, craft fair, workshop, connect & nurture versatile creative minds. It is a transitional space between the old building and green field with existing trees by changing itself from semi-open to closed space. From ground to top of the roof the multi-functional spaces are connected through one interior & another exterior stair made of Aam Kath Plank which gives a feeling of sound, texture, smell & visual to memorize the journey. At the top of the building there is a restaurant named JATRA BIROTI ; who host entire Jatra activities.

Live kitchen, thatch roof, red floor, big hall room and craft house are tending to re-create their memory along with dearly owned new spaces. A wooden room at the peak of the building place as a tribute to a former artisan of JATRA and also symbolize the Jatra far from road.

The whole process is promoting participation of all connected people not only the architects but also the carpenter, user, worker, artisan and artist, engineer and so on.
