Project Overview
Aarongâs Dhanmondi flagship marks a defining moment in Bangladeshâs contemporary retail landscape; an ambitious reimagining of what a commercial space can evoke when heritage, craft, and modern design converge with intention. The project embraces Aarongâs longstanding philosophy of honoring local artisanship while meeting the evolving demands of a new generation of urban consumers.
The 14,400 sqft site posed both an opportunity and a challenge. Located in the dense, highly activated fabric of Dhanmondi, the building required a spatial language that could balance retail efficiency with narrative depth. KNMR, in collaboration with DWm4 Intrends Ltd., Charuta, Quirk & Associates, and Aarongâs in-house creative team, approached the design as a multi-layered dialogue between brand and visitor, tradition and reinvention, product and environment.
One of its most significant achievements is the seamless weaving of art, craft, architecture, and atmosphere. The monumental four-story central installation, MohaArongo: The Great Arena, envisioned by Samiul Alam Himel, rises through the atrium as the buildingâs emotional core. Crafted by nearly 250 artisans over six months, it transforms repurposed fabrics, rescued beads, clay objects, and Nakshi Kantha archives into a vertical tapestry of folklore, cosmic imagination, and communal memory.
Complementing this is the evocative mural Santal Gaon, curated by Marufa A. Chowdhury, which honors the Santal communityâs elemental relationship with nature. Fabric walls stitched in Nakshi Kantha, handcrafted chandeliers, masks by traditional makers, and carefully layered textures of wood, clay, textiles, and greenery collectively form a warm, immersive environment.
What distinguishes the flagship is its ability to merge Aarongâs diverse sub-brands into a cohesive yet vibrant spatial choreographyâeach zone distinct, yet harmoniously tied to the central narrative of craft, memory, and renewal. Festivals often draw crowds so large that entry must be briefly restricted, a testament to the space's cultural impact.
The Aarong Dhanmondi Flagship stands not only as a retail achievement but as a living archive where tradition is not preserved behind glass, but allowed to breathe, transform, and inspire.
